How to Study in Germany Without IELTS: The MOI Certificate Explained

Learn how the Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate lets Egyptian graduates skip IELTS when applying to German universities.

What is the MOI Certificate?

MOI stands for 'Medium of Instruction.' It is an official letter from your Egyptian university stating that your Bachelor's degree was taught entirely (or primarily) in English. Many German universities accept this instead of IELTS or TOEFL.

Which Universities Accept MOI?

Over 60% of English-taught programs in our database accept MOI. You can filter by 'MOI Accepted' on the EgyAssist search page to find them instantly. Public German universities tend to be more flexible about this.

How to Get Your MOI Letter

1. Contact your university's International Affairs Office. 2. Request an official letter stating your program language. 3. The letter should be on university letterhead, signed and stamped. 4. Some universities charge a small fee (~50–200 EGP). 5. Get it translated into English if written in Arabic.

MOI vs IELTS: Which is Better?

If your program accepts MOI, use it — it's free, fast, and easy. If the program requires IELTS, aim for 6.5 or higher. TOEFL iBT 90+ is usually equivalent. Some programs accept either — always read the specific program page on the university website.
